Xiaomi Overtakes Apple And Becomes The Second Largest Project1199 Smartphone Manufacturer
3 min readXiaomi Overtakes Apple And Becomes The Second Largest Project1199 Smartphone Manufacturer. The Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi is very close to getting a ‘surprise’ against Samsung, after having grown no less than 83% in the last year. The fall of Huawei has helped a lot to achieve those results.
The data comes from analyst firm Canalys , which this week released its preliminary global distribution estimates (not sales); The report paints a market that has grown in the second quarter of the year, as a result of the increase in vaccinations against COVID-19 around the world. Specifically, the distribution of smartphones has grown by 12% in this second quarter.
In this situation, many brands have taken the opportunity to obtain growth figures that we had not seen in a long time; especially in the Top 5, where everyone has seen their numbers improve. But none like Xiaomi .
Xiaomi has hit a “spurt” of 83%, an unusual growth that immediately places it as the second brand in the world. With a 17% market share, Xiaomi remains a stone’s throw from Samsung , which, for now at least, remains untouchable in terms of global sales.
Latin America has been the one that has passed the most to Xiaomi, with a growth of 300%, while in Africa it has grown by 150% and in Western Europe, by 50%. Canalys talks about initiatives, such as the consolidation of sales channels and the stock management of old devices, as the reasons for these increases; but it is difficult to see this data and not notice that a brand is missing that, until not long ago, was the great alternative for Android phones: Huawei.
Huawei has simply disappeared from the global distribution charts; something that has also affected its related brands such as Honor, which has finally been separated and will return to markets such as Spain .
Huawei’s market share has been divided mainly among other Chinese manufacturers. We are not only talking about Xiaomi, but also about Oppo and Vivo, which surprisingly manage to enter the top 5 with growth rates that are around 27%. Those will be Xiaomi’s big rivals, according to Canalys. And, although Xiaomi has grown, the average price of its devices is 40% cheaper than Samsung’s , and 75% cheaper than Apple’s. This indicates that high-end devices like the Mi 11 Ultra have failed to attract an audience that is happier with an iPhone or a Galaxy S21.
So Xiaomi is in the same price range as Oppo and Vivo, which are growing with very attractive mid-range devices; instead, that does not seem to be a priority for Xiaomi, which leaves them to its Redmi brand.
Curiously, the one that has grown the least according to Canalys data is Apple, with data very similar to those of the previous period; Due to Xiaomi’s growth, that makes it fall to the third global position, pending the next launch of the iPhone 13.
